When an individual comes to Miami for the very first time, they have visual images of what they believe they will find in this community. Those images come from postcards sent by friends, vacation photos, television or movies; none of these images compare with the reality.
What I found in Miami was that the sky is truly blue, the sunsets were more colorful than can be imagined and the midnight sky by the beach was blue/black with stars. The water and the beaches were brilliant from the blazing sunlight. The flora and fauna were exotic and the color brilliant. The buildings were painted the colors of the rainbow and all were festooned with great varieties of vegetation. The city was and is eternally green and colorful. The colors that surrounded me have become a part of my palette.
South Florida has become a cultural oasis bringing people from all over the world. My images represent the community, the glorious uninhibited Sunbather who basks in the blazing sun in search of eternal youth, as if they had not a care in the world. The Midnight Music coming from the beachside clubs, the uninhibited dancers who dance and sway with the music and the Cool Jazz musicians who play for them into the night.
Daily we are treated to spectacular sunrises and sunsets as we commute on the freeway system that is high above our city streets or standing on the beaches, relaxing on the balcony or in your own yard. You can start or end your day with a glorious sunset or sunrise. These sky landscapes are often so spectacular that I often find myself in awe of the colors in the sky; this was the inspiration for Miami Beach Skyline. The power of the hurricanes that in the aftermath of debris somehow leave us with brilliant green lawns, tarp blue roofs and rescuers that come in the form of white trucks and inspired After Wilma.
My technique combines cutting or tearing pieces of canvas and gluing them on to canvas. I use the canvas pieces to break and abstract the images. The oil paint then becomes the unifying force brings everything back together. |
